“Submarines, Secrets and a Daring Rescue,” by Robert J. Skead with Robert A. Skead

I recently had the chance to read Submarines, Secrets and a Daring Rescue, by Robert J. Skead with Robert A. Skead. This fiction book was released August 4, 2015 by Zonderkidz.

About this book (from the back cover):

In this second book in the American Revolutionary War Adventure series, Submarines, Secrets, and a Daring Rescue, twins Ambrose and John Clark find themselves volunteering for another mission to help the newly forming United States. Inspired by their success in delivering a secret message to General George Washington himself, the boys step up to help transport much-needed gunpowder to the patriots and end up in an even more dangerous situation, trying to man one of the first submarines and then, later, attempting a prison break to rescue one of their older brothers.

Follow these brave young patriots as they follow in their father’s footsteps and rely on each other, their considerable courage, and God’s providence for guidance and strength.

My Verdict:

My children adore Colonial history, and we read lots of books about the American Revolution. This book was well-written, and we all enjoyed it. I would recommend that readers start with the first book in this series, “Patriots, Redcoats and Spies,” but we liked this book as a stand-alone as well.  The target age range for this book is 8-12, and as my children are a little younger than that range (6 and 8), I did edit the violence just a little as we read aloud. We really got into the story, and my children wanted to read more than one chapter a night, which is really the test of a good book! For any children who have an interest in history, particularly Revolutionary history, this book will be one that they will really enjoy.
