“Savor: Living Abundantly Where You Are, As You Are,” by Shauna Niequist

I recently had the chance to read Savor: Living Abundantly Where You Are, As You Are, by Shauna Niequist. This nonfiction book was published on March 10, 2015, by Zondervan.

About this book (from the back cover):

Sink deep into the everyday goodness of God and savor every moment! In this daily devotional, Shauna Niequist becomes a friend across the pages, sharing her heart with yours, keeping you company, and inviting you into the abundant life God offers. And there are recipes, too, because spiritual living happens not just when we read and pray, but also when we gather with family and friends over dinners and breakfasts and late-night snacks. These recipes are Shauna’s staples, and each one should be enjoyed around a table with people you love. So read and learn and pray and cook and share. Remember to savor each day, whatever it holds: work and play, coffee and kids, meals and prayers and the good stuff and the hard stuff. Life is all about relationships, and your daily relationship with God is worth savoring in every moment.

Final Verdict:

I read Shauna Niequist’s book Bread and Wine last year, and I found it to be so gorgeously written and moving. The recipes were fantastic, too, and an added bonus! I was excited to see what a daily devotional written by Niequist would look like, and I wasn’t disappointed. While I haven’t read every daily entry in Savor, I read a number of them at random, and really enjoyed each one. (Although if you’ve read all of her books, you’ll notice that the devotional material sounds familiar.) This book includes 21 recipes along with the daily readings, and although I think that Niequist’s ability to tell a story is better showcased in her full-length books, I am finding it fun to read a little snippet of her work each day. A lot of her work centers around friendship and hospitality, and she really motivates me to show more of what I’ve heard described as “scruffy hospitality”: using my home to show love to others, even when things are not not clean or pretty. This book would also make a great gift, as it’s really a gorgeous linen-covered hardback with a ribbon bookmark, so it just looks pretty! All in all, this is a fun, motivating read!

If you’d like to check out Savor, it is currently on sale for $10.99 for the Kindle version (regularly $16.99). If you prefer a physical copy the hardcover version is currently on sale for $14.33. Remember, Amazon’s prices can change at any time.
