“Moments & Days: How Our Holy Celebrations Shape Our Faith,” by Michelle Van Loon

I recently had the chance to read Moments & Days: How Our Holy Celebrations Shape Our Faith, by Michelle Van Loon. This nonfiction book was published on September 1, 2016, by Tyndale House.

About this book (from the back cover):

Michelle Van Loon helps us treasure our time as a gift and a spiritual responsibility, and God as faithfully present in all our moments and days.
People rarely slow down to experience their days, and so they feel rushed through life even as they begin to suspect that life lacks significance. By introducing (and reintroducing) us to the feasts and festivals of the Bible, as well as the special celebrations of the Christian calendar, Moments and Days restores a sacred sense of time throughout our year, enriching our experience of each “holy day” and enlivening our experience of even the most “ordinary time.”

Final Verdict:

Michelle Van Loon brings such a unique perspective to the writing of this book: she was raised as a secular Jew, converted to Messianic Judaism, and currently attends a protestant church that follows the traditional church calendar and uses a formal liturgy. She covers Jewish Biblical and historical feasts as well as the different sections of the Christian calendar, and both educates and inspires with her insight. I learned so much, especially about the traditional Jewish calendar days like Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashana, Sukkot, and more. My family currently celebrates Advent/Christmas/Easter, but our church does not order our worship around the traditional calendar. Reading this book motivated me to bring some of these traditional feast days and holy times into my family’s calendar, not from a legalistic perspective, but just as a way of reveling in the beautiful history of our faith. This is an amazing book, and I highly recommend it to all believers wanting to bring some of the church’s history into the way they practice their personal faith.
