Book review: The Secret of Pembrooke Park, by Julie Klassen

I recently had the chance to read The Secret of Pembrooke Park, by Julie Klassen. This fiction book was published on November 25, by Bethany House.

About this book (from the back cover):

Abigail Foster is the practical daughter. She fears she will end up a spinster, especially as she has little dowry, and the one man she thought might marry her seems to have fallen for her younger, prettier sister. Facing financial ruin, Abigail and her father search for more affordable lodgings, until a strange solicitor arrives with an astounding offer: the use of a distant manor house abandoned for eighteen years. The Fosters journey to imposing Pembrooke Park and are startled to find it entombed as it was abruptly left: tea cups encrusted with dry tea, moth-eaten clothes in wardrobes, a doll’s house left mid-play…

The handsome local curate welcomes them, but though he and his family seem acquainted with the manor’s past, the only information they offer is a stern warning: Beware trespassers drawn by rumors that Pembrooke Park contains a secret room filled with treasure. This catches Abigail’s attention. Hoping to restore her family’s finances–and her dowry–Abigail looks for this supposed treasure. But eerie sounds at night and footprints in the dust reveal she isn’t the only one secretly searching the house.

Then Abigail begins receiving anonymous letters, containing clues about the hidden room and startling discoveries about the past. As old friends and new foes come calling at Pembrooke Park, secrets come to light. Will Abigail find the treasure and love she seeks…or very real danger?

Final Verdict:

I am a big fan of Julie Klassen’s books, with my favorite up to this point being The Maid of Fairbourne Hall. However, The Secret of Pembrooke Park may be my new favorite! This book is so much fun to read, and I finished it in one sitting, staying up late because I had to know how it ended! The main character is very sympathetic, and I loved the mystery behind Pembrooke Park’s abandonment and its secret owner. Being married to a pastor, I liked that the pastor character in this book was very real and human, with flaws and imperfections, just like all pastors! The ending wraps all the mysteries up perfectly (albeit in a rather Dickensian way), and I found myself very satisfied with how everything turned out. This is a really enjoyable book to read, and is one I can recommend to anyone who enjoys a good mystery/love story.

If you’d like to check out The Secret of Pembrooke Park it is currently on sale for $9.01 for the Kindle version. (Regularly $14.99.) If you prefer a paperback copy, it’s currently on sale for $9.48. Remember, Amazon’s prices can change at any time.

Heritage High School’s Little World “secret Santa” shop opens Dec. 4

Heritage DECA’s Little World will be open from 4:30 to 8:30 December 4 thru December 13. This “secret Santa” shop allows your children to purchase Christmas presents on their own, guided by a Heritage “elf.” We will be taking my daughters, as they LOVED it last year! Hours on Saturdays are 10:30 to 4:30. They are closed on Wednesday and Sunday. Little World is located in the marketing room at Heritage High School, which is in the Vocational area. Not being familiar with the outer buildings at HHS, I just followed the signs last year and found it successfully. You park directly outside the door to Little World – no need to go wandering through the high school. Here’s more info from their FB page:

“Little World will open to the public this Thursday from 4:30 to 8:30. Prices range from a low of $2.00 to a high of $20.00. Our average prices will be between $4.00 and $8.00. All gifts will be wrapped, trimmed with a bow and gift tag. However, what you will find most special will be the total experience and memories that each child will tell you about for years to come. For more information, please contact Janice.Livingston”

18th Century Christmas Celebration at Fort Loudoun this Saturday, Dec. 6

Fort Loudoun State Historic Park will present an 18th century Christmas celebration this Saturday, December 6. Titled “Christmas at Fort Loudoun,” this annual event blends a festive holiday spirit with both educational opportunities and traditional entertainment. The event is free and open to the public.

“While Christmas in the 1750s was a simpler time, it was a very festive occasion,” said Park Manager Eric Hughey. “This is a great opportunity to get a jump start on the holiday season, while stepping back in time to herald in the holidays.”

The garrison starts at 10 a.m. and goes until 4:30 p.m. Then, there’s a reception in Visitors Center at 5 p.m., followed by a candlelight tour of the fort from 6 – 7 p.m. I usually take my daughters to the candlelight tour. It’s quite an experience!

For more information, visit the Fort Loudoun website.
