Review and discount: Unwrapping the Greatest Gift: A Family Celebration of Christmas, by Ann Voskamp

October 15, 2014

I recently had the chance to read Unwrapping the Greatest Gift: A Family Celebration of Christmas, by Ann Voskamp. This book was published on October 3, by Tyndale House.

About this book (from the back cover):

Based on the overwhelming success of The Greatest Gift, Ann Voskamp has expanded her presentation of the timeless Advent tradition of the Jesse Tree so families can celebrate together. Each day, families can read the provided Scripture passage (in connection with the original book), engage with a specially written devotion to help children of all ages understand the Advent theme for the day, and participate in suggested activities to apply the theme.

This special edition is beautifully illustrated. It can serve as a precious guide to help recapture the sacredness of the Advent season and to help the entire family understand and celebrate the epic pageantry of humankind from Adam to the Messiah.

Final Verdict:

My family has done a Jesse Tree at Christmastime for a number of years now, and it’s a tradition that makes our holidays special. In years past, since my kids were small, I’ve taken devotional readings and craft activities from Truth in the Tinsel: An Advent Experience for Little Hands, by Amanda White. I have also pulled passages out of Ann Voskamp’s Jesse Tree Journey devotional, but it always seemed like it might be better for children who were a bit older, as well as adults. This year, since my girls are older, we’re going to use Voskamp’s devotionals more, taking them from her GORGEOUS new book, Unwrapping the Greatest Gift: A Family Celebration of Christmas. In the past when reading Voskamp’s Jesse Tree passages I accessed them via a PDF printed from her website (no longer available), but this year, this book takes the place of the tattered pages from my printer. Each day’s reading details the story of an event or person in the Old and New Testaments, leading up to the Nativity. My girls already love the beautiful illustrations in this book, and while in the past we’ve colored these free Jesse Tree ornaments (which are great!), this book includes a free download of Voskamp’s lovely cut paper ornaments, which we will be using. (Example in photo below.) After reading each day’s selection, my girls decorate their Jesse Tree ornament and hang it on our little tree. It’s a fun project that helps everyone keep Christ at the center of our holiday season. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in starting or continuing a Jesse Tree tradition with their family.

PLUS, this book is currently #1 in the Christmas category on Amazon, and right now it’s $10 off!
