Homeschool families: get a one-time discount on Sonlight curriculum

Sonlight is a homeschool curriculum that uses great books to teach core subjects in a “compelling, refreshing way”. We are homeschooling my 2nd grader this year, and have been extremely impressed with the Sonlight curriculum! It’s expensive, but well-worth it. Although there aren’t a lot of discounts available for this curriculum, anyone can  get $5 off a Sonlight purchase of $50 or more if you use my Rewards ID code, which is CB20393440. I know $5 isn’t a lot, but it’s better that no discount at all! This is a one-time discount for new Sonlight families.

Also, if you’re planning ahead, Sonlight often offers a January discount of $100 off a core to encourage new homeschooling families to either buy ahead or try switching from an old curriculum that’s not working for a given child.

Here are some reasons other parents love this curriculum (taken from the Sonlight website):
*    My children are getting a great education and loving it … at least most of the time! Sonlight is a literature-based curriculum, so we read tons of great books out loud together. The kids devour plenty of books on their own, too. We stay away from boring textbooks and really engage in what we’re learning.
*    That time spent reading together on the couch is creating some great memories–we learn so much about each other as we discuss the events, ideas and characters we discover.
*    With the Instructor’s Guides Sonlight provides, we can just open up the guide and do school every day without me spending much time planning. That gives us even more time to hang out … and keep up with the laundry.

Do you use Sonlight? I’d love to hear about your experience!

Free kids’ book for Kindle: Voyage with the Vikings (Imagination Station)

If your children are looking for fun reading material this summer, they might want to try out the Imagination Station series (recommended for ages 6-9 – but that’s just a suggestion.) We haven’t started reading these books yet, but they come highly recommended and I’ve heard them compared to the Magic Treehouse books, which we love. Right now, the first book in the series, Voyage with the Vikings, is FREE for Kindle. Go here to take a look.

Here’s a synopsis:

While visiting Mr. Whittaker at Whit’s Soda Shoppe, Beth and Patrick find a mysterious letter in the Imagination Station requesting a Viking sunstone. The letter is old and says that someone named Albert will be imprisoned if the sunstone isn’t found. Mr. Whittaker sends cousins Patrick and Beth to Greenland circa 1000. On their quest for the sunstone, the cousins meet Vikings Erik the Red and Leif Eriksson—and find the sunstone as they join Leif on his first voyage to North America. But the adventure is just beginning, for when they return to Mr. Whittaker’s workshop with the sunstone, there is another note waiting for them, requesting a silver goblet.
Join Patrick and Beth as they continue their travel to various lands and time in the Imagination Station book series.

Review and Kindle sale: Be the Dad She Needs You to Be, by Dr. Kevin Leman

I recently had the chance to read Be the Dad She Needs You to Be, by Dr. Kevin Leman. This nonfiction book was released on May 13, 2014 by Thomas Nelson.

About this book (from the back cover):

A call to dads to step up to the plate to become the loving, actively engaged father that a daughter needs for life and relational success.

The relationship that matters most to your daughter isn’t the one with her mother—it’s the one with you, Dad. Her self-esteem, choices, behavior, character, and even her ideas about or choice of a marriage partner are all directly tied to you, as the most important representative to her of the male species.
In Be the Dad She Needs You to Be Dr. Kevin Leman, internationally-known psychologist, New York Times best-selling author, and father of four daughters, will show you not only how to get the fathering job done and done well, but also how to:
  • Make each daughter feel unique, special, and valued
  • Discipline the right way . . . when it’s needed
  • Talk turkey about what guys are really thinking
  • Keep the critical eye at bay
  • Wave the truce flag when females turn your family room into a battleground
  • Set your daughter up for life and relational success

With some effort on your part (and very few dollars), you can gain the kind of relationship you dream of with your daughter—one based on mutual love and respect. The simple yet profound suggestions will transform you into the kind of man your daughter needs . . . for a lifetime

My Verdict:

I am obviously not a dad – I got this book for my husband – but this is still a great book for moms of daughters to read. Dr. Leman is qualified to write this book, not just because he’s a successful psychologist, but also because he has successfully raised four daughters to adulthood. That in itself speaks volumes. I really liked his sections on walking the fine line of discipline (not being too authoritarian, but not being just your child’s “friend” either) and how birth order plays in to your child’s personality. I though Dr. Leman was at his best when he was being serious and directly discussing the topic; I wasn’t a big fan of his jokes, to be honest, especially the ones involving his wife. I know he meant well, but they felt like he was painting her as a caricature of a nagging wife. If you skip past the jokes to the meat of the book, this is an excellent read for both dads and moms of daughters.
If you’d like to check out Be the Dad She Needs You to Be it is currently on sale for $11.99 for the Kindle version right now (Regularly $17.99.) If you prefer a physical copy the hardcover version is currently on sale for $13.53. Remember, Amazon’s prices can change at any time.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review.
