Upcoming Penny4Arts performances: Sleeping Beauty ballet, Rhythm N’ Blooms, Companhia Urbana de Danca and more

April 2, 2014

Penny4Arts is a program where children can attend a performance for $0.01 when accompanied by a paying adult. It’s a great way to expose your children to the performing and visual arts! Here are some upcoming Penny4Arts performances of particular interest.

Please note that sometimes tickets must be reserved ahead of time to receive the discount, and sometimes the discount is limited to residents of Knox County. I know that the Sleeping Beauty ballet penny tickets are definitely available to residents of Blount County; they are also offering FREE admission to all civic employees and their families. Any fire, police, or EMT personnel, as well as teachers and school system employees may present their badge or official identification at the ticket booth, and they and their immediate families will be admitted free of charge. I am definitely taking my family to this performance!

I would also assume that the Companhia Urbana de Danca performance would provide penny tickets to residents of Blount County because it’s taking place at the Clayton Center.

The Carpetbag Theatre and Clayton Center present Companhia Urbana de Danca

Founded in Brazil in 2004 by dancer Tiago Sousa and choreographer and Artistic Director Sonia Destri Lie, Companhia Urbana de Danca is an ensemble of street performers working to foster the human experience through dance. Destri’s experiences traveling through Europe for work in theater, films exposed her to hip-hop and b-boy techniques. Highly influenced by Brazilian street forms, she began to integrate these techniques into her already established contemporary movement sensibility. Pulling from the favelas of Rio where many of her company members grew up, Companhia Urbana de Danca aims to transcend cultural boundaries, while showcasing eclectic skill sets.
