My almost-no-coupons Kroger trip 4/29/14

Here’s my shopping trip from today.

I got all of the above for $75 and used very few coupons. Kroger has a lot of great sales right now! This is just a reminder about three things:
1. Know your stock-up price on frequently used items. Some of those for us are organic yogurt for the kids, Greek yogurt for us, and pasta sauce.

2. Don’t forget to check the manager’s special areas. I found some great things in three different areas: the dry goods Manager’s Special corner, the refrigerated clearance area, and the baked goods clearance area. (There’s also a clearance area for meat, but there wasn’t anything we needed there today.)

3. Remember to use e-coupons! I had a Free Friday Download coupon for the Chobani yogurt (which saved me $1.25), Ibotta coupons for the milk and the evol burrito (which saved me $1.50) and a Saving Star rebate on the Greek yogurt.

I also had a $1 coupon in the mail for natural foods (don’t throw away those mailers!) and a $1 Betty Crocker coupon that I found in my coupon folder. Total savings was 35%, which is not the 50% or higher I can get if I plan things out well, but for a quick trip to stock up on regularly-used items, it’s not too shabby! Plus I’ll get a little money back in rebates!

Review: Mark of Distinction, by Jessica Dotta

I recently had the chance to read Mark of Distinction, by Jessica Dotta. This fiction book was published on April 18, by Tyndale House.

About this book (from the back cover):

London is said to be the glittering jewel of society, a world unto itself—but to Julia Elliston it is a city of shadows. Her life is swiftly dissolving into scandal. And in Victorian society, even a whisper of scandal—substantiated or not—can be the death of a young woman’s reputation.

Now under the watchful eye of Lord Roy Pierson, one of most influential men in England, Julia begrudgingly accepts his protection. But Chance Macy’s power is far-reaching as well, and he is eager to assert his claim over her.

Thrust into society as the Emerald Heiress, Julia is the toast of London, a celebrated curiosity. But in reality she’s trapped between the clutches of two powerful men. Aided only by a gentleman whose intentions she prays she can trust, Julia must finally take control of her own fate—but outwitting one’s foe rarely goes according to plan.

Final Verdict:

Jessica Dotta’s author’s bio says she desires to write “to write in a style that blends the humor of Jane Austen and the dark drama of a Bronte sister,” and it’s something she does very well. Throughout my reading of this book I found myself comparing it with both Jane Eyre (a book I love) and Wuthering Heights (a book I love less now than I did in high school). As for Jane Austen, I saw more of Northanger Abbey in this book than any of Austen’s other novels – but that’s not a bad thing. My main problem with this book is that it’s second in a series, and Dotta makes it very hard for those of us who haven’t read book one to get immersed in the story. I still am not sure about major plot points, like the main character’s marriage status. I also found it hard to side with the main character’s love interest who was apparently featured heavily in the first novel but hardly appears in this one. So, if you’re interested in this novel, make sure you’ve read book one – Born of Persuasion – first, or you’re in for a world of confusion.

If you’d like to check out Mark of Distinction it is currently on sale for $9.99 for the Kindle version. (Regularly $14.99.) If you prefer a paperback copy, it’s currently on sale for $10.79. Remember, Amazon’s prices can change at any time.

Get The Ultimate Homemaking Bundle--Hurry: Sale 6 Days Only!

100+ bloggers and authors are bringing back The Ultimate Homemaking Bundle again this year, and it’s better than ever! I wrote about this bundle last spring, and a number of you told me you found it helpful.

This year’s deal includes even more books and freebies!

The books cover topics like parenting, holiday planning, cooking and meal-planning, organizing and home decor, homeschooling, spiritual growth, time-management, money management and more!

I have found it to be really easy to pull ebooks into the iBooks section of my iPad. This past Christmas I brought my iPad to the breakfast table each day to read our family devotions and activities. It was really convenient, and my kids loved it. You can also read these ebooks on Kindle or on your computer.

This book bundle would be great as a wedding or baby shower present! I think I may be doing that myself.

Here’s more info:

The Ultimate Homemaking Bundle is a complete library of great eBooks on homemaking—a truly valuable knowledge base you’ll use for many years to come.

Unlike a library, though, you don’t have to spend years building it up. The Ultimate Bundles team has done the hard work for you, searching the web to find the very best eBooks from top homemaking authors and combining them into one essential collection that you can buy in one simple purchase.

Through April 28th, you can get this HUGE Homemaking Bundle for just $29.95!

Get ALL of these eBooks for 1 LOW Price! One Week Only!

In this bundle, you will find 80+ eResources aimed to grow you in all aspects of homemaking, including:

If you bought each one of these 80 ebooks separately, they would cost $698 total. Obviously, I know that there’s no way you would buy all of these ebooks separately, and I’m sure there are probably some on the list you wouldn’t personally be interested in.

But, if there are 10 to 20 books on the list that you’d love to read, that makes each book just $1.50 to $3 each — which is a great price!

Best prices on eggs to dye this week: Walgreens and Walmart

Looking for eggs to dye? The best price I’ve found this week on regular eggs is at Walgreens, where they’re $0.99/dozen. If you have children with egg allergies, I’m told that Walmart has a dozen “faux” eggs that are dyeable for under $2/dozen, which is fun, and while you’re there, you can also price match Walgreen’s egg prices.

If you’ve seen a lower price on eggs, please let me know!
