Free performance today: “The Magical Music of Shakespeare” from the Knoxville Opera Company

“The Magical Music of Shakespeare” is the theme of a special free Knoxville Opera Company performance at Pellissippi State Community College today (Monday, Feb. 24.)

The KOC program features musical selections from operas and Broadway musicals that were inspired by Shakespeare plays, among them, “Romeo and Juliet,” “Hamlet,” and “Othello.” Performers include University of Tennessee Opera Theatre alumni. Brian Salesky is executive director and conductor of the Knoxville Opera.

“The Magical Music of Shakespeare” is at 2 p.m. in the Goins Building Auditorium on the Hardin Valley Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road. The event is free and the community is invited.

“We’re delighted to have the Knoxville Opera come to present a program of Shakespeare-inspired opera,” said Carol Luther, professor of English at Pellissippi State. “Shakespeare’s influence has spread to many other arts. The musical adaptations reveal new facets in Shakespeare’s plays and once again confirm his genius.”

For more information, visit Pellissippi State’s website here.

Giveaway: win tickets to Junior Service League of Maryville’s new fundraising event: “Merry Margaritas” ($100 value!)

UPDATE: The winner is comment #10, Sara F. Thanks to all who entered, and remember you can still purchase tickets at Dandy Lions!

Junior Service League of Maryville has an exciting new fundraising event to benefit Toys for Blount County! “MERRY MARGARITAS” will take place on March 8th from 6 – 10 p.m. at Second Harvest Event Center in Maryville. There will be a nice Mexican-themed dinner, drinks, a silent auction, and live music by The Buchanan Boys.

Tickets are $50 each and are available for purchase at Dandy Lions Gifts in Maryville or from any Junior Service League member. Tickets must be purchased ahead of time, as they’re not available at the door.

100% of the proceeds go to support Junior Service League’s efforts to supply underprivileged children with toys at Christmas through the Toys for Blount County program. This annual toy drive has collected Christmas gifts for Blount County’s children in need since 1972. I am a sustaining member of JSL, and have always been impressed at how its members work year round to provide toys to more than 1,400 area children in need.

Junior Service League is giving away two tickets for Merry Margaritas to one of you (a $100 value!) Plus, if you’re the winner and would like to purchase more tickets, I can take care of that too.

Here’s how to enter this giveaway:

Required Entry:

Leave a comment on this post and let me know who you’d like to take to the event: spouse? Friend? (If you’re reading this on Facebook/Twitter hop on over to to leave your comment.)

Additional Optional Entries:

You can do each of the following things for an additional entry in the giveaway. You can only do each of these once, for a possible total of 6 entries.

Please leave a separate comment for each method of entry. If you only leave one comment then you only have one entry, as each comment is numbered and I randomly choose a number. Make sense?

This giveaway ends at midnight EST on Tuesday, February 25. I will choose a winner on Wednesday, February 26  using and will contact them via email. I was not compensated for this post – I just really love Junior Service League. All opinions are my own.

Giveaway: Tickets to the Junior League’s 2014 Bag-A-Bargain rummage sale preview party – 4 winners, $50 value!

UPDATE: The winners are comments #21 Becky T., #41 Hayley I., #30 Sarah M., and #59 Paige M. Thanks to all who entered!

I am proud to be a Sustaining Member of the Junior League of Knoxville. I joined the Junior League in 2002, and have thoroughly enjoyed my League experience. My favorite event every year is Bag-A-Bargain, the giant rummage sale for which the League is famous! This year’s Bag-A-Bargain sale will take place on Saturday March 8 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Jacob Building in Chilhowee Park (near the Knoxville Zoo).

This will be the second year I won’t be working a setup shift as an active member, so no Thrifty Christy’s Guide to Bag-A-Bargain, sorry! If you’d like to see what I’ve written about the sale in past years, you can read all of those stories here.

I’ve been a huge fan of Junior League sales ever since I furnished my first post-college apartment with items from the Junior League of Birmingham’s sale. Junior Leaguers know how to put together great rummage sales! Here are some of my photos of previous sales:

Tickets to this amazing thrift sale are just $5, and you can get $1 off each ticket at the door by bringing a canned food item to donate, too. There’s also a coupon in the Knoxville Schools Coupon Book (but you can’t combine discounts). Tickets go on sale at 7 a.m. the day of the sale, doors open at 8 a.m., and be aware that people WILL line up to get in. There were even lines one year when it snowed.

Thanks to the League for allowing me to offer a giveaway for you! Four lucky winners will each win a set of two tickets to shop early at the Bag-A-Bargain preview party on Friday, March 7 at 6:30 p.m., plus you’ll get to enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres, a band, and more! These tickets are usually $25 each! (Please note that although you do get to shop early, prices that night are double the price listed on the tag. I’ve still found some amazing deals at the preview party, especially in the Treasure Chest section!)

Here’s how to enter:

Required Entry:

To enter to win, just leave a comment below letting me know if you’ve ever been to Bag-A-Bargain. That’s it! (If you’re reading this on Facebook/Twitter hop on over to to leave your comment.)

Additional Optional Entries:

You can do each of the following things for an additional entry in the giveaway. You can only do each of these once, for a possible total of 5 entries.

Please leave a separate comment for each method of entry. If you only leave one comment then you only have one entry, as each comment is numbered and I randomly choose a number. Make sense?

This giveaway ends Tuesday, February 25 at midnight EST. I will choose 4 winners via and will post their names on Wednesday, February 26. Giveaway open to US readers only.

Disclosure: I received passes to this event plus additional passes from the Junior League of Knoxville to share with my readers. Tickets will be mailed out to winners at the addresses provided. I cannot be held responsible for any problems with postal delivery. All opinions stated in this post are my own.

New BOGO Angel Soft coupon and Walgreens deal

BOGO Angel Soft 12 double roll and 4 double roll

UPDATE: Well, I just printed this coupon and the wording is misleading: when you buy a 12 pack, you get a free 4-pack. So it won’t work for this Walgreens deal, sorry!

There’s a new BOGO coupon available to print for Angel Soft toilet paper. Walgreens has Angel Soft on sale for $3.50 with store coupon, which makes it $1.75/pack – a pretty good price! My buy price for TP is $0.25/roll, and this deal would make it less than $0.20/roll. Just remember to give the cashier your manufacturer coupon first, THEN the Walgreens store coupon, otherwise the computer gets confused. There’s also a $0.30/1 coupon for Angel Soft packs that are 4 rolls or larger, below.
