Book review and sale: Nelson’s Annual Preacher’s Sourcebook, Volume 3

I recently had the chance to read Nelson’s Annual Preacher’s Sourcebook, Volume 3, by By Dr. O. S. Hawkins. This nonfiction book was released November 19, 2013 by Thomas Nelson.

About this book (from the official description):

Preach great sermons and plan innovative worship services with the newest edition of Nelson’s Annual Preacher’s Sourcebook. This is the same sermon planner you have come to depend on for more than ten years. In this volume, look for sermons, articles, and sermon starters by Daniel L. Akin, Dr. Mark L. Bailey, Dr. Phillip R. Bethancourt, Matt Carter, Steve Dighton, David Epstein, J.D. Greear, Ph.D., Jim Henry, Dr. Jeff Iorg, Dr. James MacDonald, Dr. Russell D. Moore, Dr. Adrian Rogers, Steven Smith, K. Marshall Williams,Sr., and Dr. O.S. Hawkins, general editor. These outstanding pastors provide an entire year’s worth of preaching and worship resources with a new, topical focus. Look for a new volume every fall.

Features include:

  • Sermons, creative outlines, illustrations, and quotes
  • Worship helps, including hymns, prayers, and Scripture texts
  • Inspirational thoughts and preaching techniques
  • Sermons for special occasions and holidays

My Verdict:

This is obviously a book review targeted at a small, specific group of folks: preachers. The Nelson’s Annual Preacher’s Sourcebook is a reference book to assist preachers in sermon preparation by providing outlines on specific subjects and passages of Scripture in order to aid pastors in their research. This book does not provide ready-to-go sermons for the purpose of being copied – it specifically states that it’s not “an ‘easy fix’ for late Saturday night sermon preparation” – but rather, it provides a great starting place and is to be used along with all the other research materials pastors use for sermon prep. I am not a preacher, but my husband is, and he asked that I request this book for review after looking at the impressive names of the contributing authors. That was the main selling point for him: the wide variety of well-known and respected evangelical preachers who contributed material to this book.  He was very pleased with the book when we received it, and said he plans to use it to assist with sermon preparation in the future. Most of the contributors present sermon series of a topical nature, and draw from all over the Bible to build their 12-15 sermon series. If you are looking for an expositional series that works through an entire book of scripture, Daniel Akin (President of Southeastern Baptist Seminary) contributes a 13 sermon series from the Gospel of Mark and Jeff Iorg (President of Golden Gate Seminary) contributes a 13 sermon series out of Philippians; developed around the topic of healthy church life. The volume concludes with a number of helpful articles on preaching issues in general, as well as advice for preaching on special occasions; like funerals, weddings, and holidays. The paperback version of this book also comes with a CD-ROM that contains the sermon content in an easily-searchable, WORD document format that can be altered to fit the preacher’s needs. Nelson’s Annual Preacher’s Sourcebook, Volume 3 follows Volume 1 and Volume 2 (links provided) and is highly recommended for preachers or any person who finds himself in need of assistance in preparing a sermon.

If you’d like to check out Nelson’s Annual Preacher’s Sourcebook, Volume 3 the Kindle version is currently on sale for $16.99 right now, which is 32% off (regularly $24.99). If you prefer a physical copy the paperback version is currently on sale for $19.17. Remember, Amazon’s prices can change at any time.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze® book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
