Crazy deal: Get a Kindle for as low as $9! I just did!

kindle

Amazon has a new promotion where some people will receive a coupon for up to $60 off a Kindle, which, if you get the highest value coupon, makes the basic Kindle just $9. I just tried this deal and I GOT A $9 KINDLE!! I am so very excited and I am hoping some of you get this deal too. To see if you’re eligible, go here. You’ll either get a coupon with a message (like the one I got, above) for possible $60, $40, or $20 off, or you’ll get a message that you’re not eligible. (Although I’ve seen some people post online that even if you see the “not eligible” message, if you hit refresh a few times, a coupon may pop up.)

Plus, shipping is free too!

Good luck! If you get a cheap Kindle please tell me!

Thanks, Faithful Provisions!

Apply by Jan 5 to get free books to hand out on World Book Night!

wbn2014

World Book Night is April 23, 2014, and you can celebrate by applying to be a giver! It’s really easy: just fill out the application here and if you’re selected, you’ll receive 20 copies of one of the book selections to give away to light or non-readers. You’ll need to apply by January 5.

I was chosen as a giver last year and I know a number of you all were too! This is a great opportunity to share the love of reading with others!

Here are the books you can choose from:

wbnbooks2014

And here’s more info on the program from the World Book Night folks:

Volunteer book givers are central to World Book Night U.S., putting wonderful books into the hands of light or non-readers in their communities.

On April 23, 2013, U.S. book givers personally handed out half a million printed books in 5,800 towns and cities across the country. And we’re doing it again together this year!

We provide the free books, and the book givers seek out light or non-readers, especially people who may not have access to printed books for reasons of means or geography. Book givers receive 20 free paperback copies of one World Book Night title, not too many to carry but enough to share with a good number of potential new readers.

Are you interested in becoming a World Book Night U.S. book giver? We ask you to fill out the World Book Night U.S. online application; click here to begin. You will be asked what your first, second, and third book choices are, why you wish to share these books, and where you will go to personally hand out the books. Apply by January 5, 2014.

Review and Kindle Sale: The Jesus Story: Everything That Happens in the New Testament in Plain English, by Dr. William Marty

I recently had the chance to read The Jesus Story: Everything That Happens in the New Testament in Plain English, by Dr. William H. Marty. This nonfiction book was published on October 15 by Bethany House.

About this book (from the back cover):

Rediscover This Compelling Story

The story of Jesus is the most remarkable ever told. It’s an exciting adventure, a tender love story, and a drama full of danger, betrayal, and the ultimate sacrifice. But sometimes the genealogies, the confusing repetition, and the varying order of events in the Gospels can distract readers from this powerful narrative. Or maybe you’ve heard the story so many times that it has lost its impact.

Here, Dr. William Marty presents the complete narrative of Jesus in an easy-to-read, chronological account. It’s a fascinating retelling of everything from his birth to his ascension–as well as what happened in the church after he left. The Jesus Story is perfect if you want to get to know Jesus better or recapture the amazement of hearing his story for the first time.

“[Dr. William Marty] sees Scripture with such heart that you can feel its pulse on every page.”
–Beth Moore

Final Verdict:

Dr. Marty aims to combine the information given in the four gospels into one, easy-to-read historical account, not to replace Scripture, but to make it easier to follow as a historical account. He does an excellent job detailing the people and places described in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and explains events in a matter-of-fact way. Reading this book is like reading a very interesting history textbook. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the story of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, this story will help explain all of the people and events that the four Gospels describe. This book will probably be more helpful to new believers; it’s probably not targeted to someone who has studied the Gospels extensively.

If you’d like to check out The Jesus Story: Everything That Happens in the New Testament in Plain English it is currently on sale for $5.99 for the Kindle version. (Regularly $9.99.) If you prefer a paperback copy it’s currently on sale for $8.99. Remember, Amazon’s prices can change at any time.

The featured product for this review was provided to me at no cost by Bethany House. All opinions expressed are my own. If you’d like to sign up to receive review copies from Bethany House, visit www.bethanyhouse.com/bookreviewers.

Review and giveaway: The Halloween Stories Collection, Volume 2 (Scholastic Storybook Treasures)

UPDATE: The winner is #95, Audrey G. Thanks to all who entered!

My family spent last weekend decorating for Fall and getting out all our Halloween and Thanksgiving stories and movies. We have a new set to add to the mix: the new DVD set that Scholastic has available called The Halloween Collection, Volume 2. We’re on Fall Break, and watching some movies here and there, and I love knowing that although my girls are getting “screen time,” they are watching movies based on books, which helps feed their love of reading. This 3-disc set contains three DVDs that each contain movie versions of classic children’s storybooks. (If you don’t know about my love for Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVDs, you can read more here.)

These DVDs are recommended for children ages 3-9, and a few of them were too scary for my 4- and 6-year-olds right now; you know your children best and can decide whether you should pre-screen these stories to determine the best age to watch.
Here’s info on all the stories in this collection:

THE HALLOWEEN STORIES COLLECTION, VOLUME 2 (SRP $24.95) includes 14 stories perfect for early and pre-readers on All Hallows Eve. Though filled with skeletons, witches and more seasonal spooks, families can encourage creativity and music appreciation with the classic sing-along Dem Bones, learn about Latin American holidays with The Day of the Dead, and delight in the not so spooky-ooky stories of Teeny-Tiny and the Witch-Woman. The three DVDs in this ready-made library of Halloween tales are:

The Day Of The Dead…And More Halloween Tales – The DVD also includes these animated stories: The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything; Kitten’s First Full Moon; and Fletcher and the Falling Leaves.
NOTE: This DVD is also available as a single title ($14.95 SRP).

The second DVD is Dem Bones…And More Sing-Along Stories – The DVD also includes these animated stories: Dinosaur Bones; Hush Little Baby; The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night; and The Erie Canal.

The final DVD is Teeny-Tiny And The Witch-Woman…And More Spooky Stories – The DVD also includes these animated stories: The Boy with Two Shadows; Los Gatos Black on Halloween; What’s Under My Bed? and King of the Cats

FEATURES
Read-Along Function
Author interviews, including Kevin Henkes, Bob Barner and Linda Williams – never before available on DVD

This DVD set retails for $24.95, and you can get 20% off when you use coupon code NEWKIDEO20 at checkout. Also, The Halloween Collection, Volume 1 is available here, and New Kideo has a fantastic sale going on right now, so check that out too!

New Kideo is letting me give one copy of The Halloween Collection, Volume 2 to one of you! Here’s how to win.

Required Entry:

To enter to win, just leave a comment below letting me know what your favorite children’s book is. That’s it! (If you’re reading this on Facebook/Twitter hop on over to thriftychristy.com to leave your comment.)

Additional Optional Entries:

You can do each of the following things for an additional entry in the giveaway. You can only do each of these once, for a possible total of 6 entries.

Please leave a separate comment for each method of entry. If you only leave one comment then you only have one entry, as each comment is numbered and I randomly choose a number. Make sense?

This giveaway ends at midnight EST on Friday October 11. I will choose one winner on Saturday October 12using random.org and will contact him or her via email. Winner must respond to me within 24 hours or I will pick a new winner. Giveaway open to US residents only.
