2013 U-Pick season beginning at Mercier Orchards

Mercier Orchards just announced that the 2013 u-pick season has begun! We try to include a visit to this orchard in our Fall Break plans. My girls love picking their own apples, and their fried pies are SO good!

From their website:

It’s our favorite time of the year! Apple season is finally upon us, so come celebrate our first apple U-PICK of the year with a Gala exclusive on August 17th and 18th from 10am-4pm.  Apple U-PICK will run every Saturday and Sunday from 10-4 through October. $10 gets one customer a peck sized bag to fill with freshly picked apples and a guided tractor tour. If you’re not interested in picking, but would still love the tour the cost is $2 per person. Children 2 and under are free to ride! It’s sure to be a fun filled weekend! Please note that pets are not allowed either in the tractor or in the orchard. Picking is subject to weather and availability.

Review and giveaway: coastal ecology and sing-along songs on Roger Day’s “Marsh Mud Madness” DVD

UPDATE: The giveaway winner is comment #15, Brocha. Thanks to all who entered!

Have you heard of Roger Day? He’s a children’s musician who has educational songs that make children laugh, and who I’ve always thought sounds just like Jimmy Buffet. He has a new concert DVD out called Marsh Mud Madness, and it’s a combination of a live concert and an ecological tour of a salt water marsh. My children loved this DVD and have been singing the songs – especially “Mosquito Burrito” – constantly. My daughter’s first grade teacher is also a fan. I volunteered in her class last week and during a break she was playing Roger Day’s music for her students.

Here are a few clips to give you a feel for Marsh Mud Madness:

Here’s the official description of the DVD:

One of the nation’s top touring family artists, Roger Day has a knack for creating songs that make complex ideas simple and fun. In this full-length DVD – filmed live at the Savannah Music Festival and on location at the University of Georgia Marine Institute on Sapelo Island – Roger introduces children to the plants and animals that live in and around the salt water marshes and beaches of barrier islands and how each one has an important role to play in a healthy coastal ecosystem. Even sneaky ghost crabs and regurgitating vultures!

There are also FREE grade-specific study guides available for teachers and parents here.

Roger is a Birmingham native (like myself!) and spends a great deal of time on the road, touring throughout the Southeast. If you have a chance to see one of his live performances, make sure you don’t miss it! You can find more of his touring schedule on the Roger Day Facebook page.

Marsh Mud Madness is available for purchase at cdbaby.com or on Amazon. You can purchase a download of the album here.

Would you like to win a copy of Marsh Mud Madness?

Required Entry:

To enter to win, just leave a comment below letting me know what song you think your children would like best. You can find a list of songs on the Marsh Mud Madness Bandcamp page here.

That’s it! (If you’re reading this on Facebook/Twitter hop on over to thriftychristy.com to leave your comment.)

Additional Optional Entries:

You can do each of the following things for an additional entry in the giveaway. You can only do each of these once, for a possible total of 5 entries.

Please leave a separate comment for each method of entry. If you only leave one comment then you only have one entry, as each comment is numbered and I randomly choose a number. Make sense?

This giveaway ends at midnight EST on Thursday August 22. I will choose a winner on Friday August 23 using random.org and will contact him or her via email.

Thanks to Roger Day for providing the DVDs for this review and giveaway. All opinions in this review are solely my own. Giveaway open to US readers only.
