Review and giveaway: The Springtime Collection, featuring Max’s Chocolate Chicken (Scholastic Storybook Treasures)

March 20, 2013

UPDATE: The winner is #8, Lynette!
Who doesn’t love Ruby and Max? My girls are huge fans, and as Easter approaches, we have been enjoying the new DVD set that Scholastic has available: The Springtime Collection, featuring Max’s Chocolate Chicken. We are at the beach for Spring Break, and these DVDs made the 9 hour drive bearable! I love knowing that although my girls are getting a lot of “screen time,” they are watching movies based on books, which helps feed their love of reading. More on that later.

This 3-disc set features the title DVD and two more: The Red Hen, and Chicken Little. I’ve already reviewed The Red Hen collection in detail here. The other DVD sets were new to us. Here are the books featured on each:

Max’s Chocolate Chicken features four stories, all by Rosemary Wells, including the title story:

Max’s Christmas (English and Spanish versions!):

Otto Runs for President:

and Morris’s Disappearing Bag:

When I say that watching these stories fuels my girls’ love for reading, I’m not exaggerating. After we watched this DVD for the first time we headed to the library for our weekly trip. My girls found the book Otto Runs for President on the book wall in the kids’ area and ran squealing to me, begging to check it out. This happens all the time! I just love the Scholastic Storybook Collection DVDs!

The other DVD in this 3-disk set is Chicken Little…and more zany animal stories. It features the following books:

Chicken Little, by Ed and Rebecca Emberley

The Great White Man-Eating Shark, by Margaret Mahy (which my girls have been referencing nonstop since we’re at the beach right now.)

The Three-Legged Cat, also by Margaret Mahy

Dooby Dooby Moo, by Doreen Cronin:

This DVD set retails for $24.95, and you can get 20% off when you use coupon code NEWKIDEO20 at checkout.

Also, New Kideo has a fantastic sale going on right now, so check that out too!

My favorite children’s book right now is Fix-It Duck. I love my son’s excitement and participation when I read it.
