Review and Kindle sale: Who Do You Think You Are, by Mark Driscoll

I recently had the chance to read Who Do You Think You Are, by Mark Driscoll. This nonfiction book was released January 8, 2013 by Thomas Nelson.

About this book (from the back cover):

How you answer those questions affects every aspect of your life: personal, public, and spiritual. So it’s vital to get the answer right.

Pastor and best-selling author Mark Driscoll believes false identity is at the heart of many struggles—and that you can overcome them by having your true identity in Christ. In Who Do You Think You Are?, Driscoll explores the question, “What does it mean to be ‘in Christ’?” In the process he dissects the false-identity epidemic and, more important, provides the only solution—Jesus.””

Final Verdict:

Mark Driscoll is the founding pastor at Mars Hill Church in Seattle. He is a somewhat controversial character, mainly because he kind of takes on a stereotypical “Manly-man” persona (with a capitol M) within the evangelical Christian community. I have no problem with him or his theological views, but his ideas are very different from those you’ll probably find when interviewing the typical person-on-the-street in the Pacific Northwest. So, if you like or don’t like Mark Driscoll, you’ll probably read your opinion of him into your opinion of this book. If you have no idea who he is, then this is a pretty standard book on Christian identity that may click with you. I found it to be interesting reading, and I like the way he categorizes his topics. Nothing new, but all solid theology.

If you’d like to check out Who Do You Think You Are it is currently on sale for $9.43 for the Kindle version right now, which is 59% off. (Regularly $22.99) If you prefer a hard copy it’s currently on sale for $13.64. Remember, Amazon’s prices can change at any time.

Giveaway and Review: Scholastic Storybook Collections presents The Red Hen…and More Cooking Stories

UPDATE: The giveaway winner is #43, Kristie D. Thanks to all who entered!

As we prepare for Valentine’s Day, we have been doing a lot of cooking in my house. It was fitting, then, that the latest Scholastic Storybook Collection DVD, The Red Hen…and More Cooking Stories landed on our doorstep. If you’re not familiar with Scholastic Storybook Collection DVDs, read me gush about them here. As always, this DVD did not disappoint. The four books brought to life on this DVD are:

The Red Hen, by Ed and Rebecca Emberly

Bread Comes to Life, by George Levenson

How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food, by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague

Arnie, the Doughnut, by Laurie Keller

Here’s the plot summary of The Red Hen, if you aren’t familiar with this classic:

In the Emberley’s sparkling version of a classic tale, Red Hen finds a recipe for a Simply Splendid Cake and asks her friends the cat, the rat, and the frog to help with the preparations. But it seems as though her friends want no part in the cake until it’s ready to eat. Will they decide to pitch in, or let Red Hen do all of the hard work?  Find out in this highly enjoyable adaptation.

Our new favorite story from this collection is the nonfiction Bread Comes to Life, which, narrated by the fantastic Lily Tomlin, discusses the process of making bread. After watching it my girls begged to make some bread of our own, and we had a great time making a couple of loaves for my daughter’s Kindergarten teachers as Valentine’s Day presents.

Arnie the Doughnut is a story that we watched on another Scholastic DVD, and it has been one of our favorites for a while now. When we go to doughnut stores my daughters ask for Arnie Doughnuts (meaning the ones with rainbow sprinkles). I love how books become part of our lives like that!

In this DVD’s bonus features there’s a fun recipe for how to bake your own cake, just like the Red Hen, which my daughters thought was fantastic!

I love how these DVDs lead to more reading in my house. We are constantly checking out books from the library that we’ve seen on our “book movies,” as my daughters call them.

The Red Hen…and More Cooking Stories is available starting TODAY, February 12! Check it out and let me know if you and your family enjoy it as much as we have!
