Review and giveaway: Scholastic Storybook Treasures – Stone Soup and Stories about African American Heritage featuring March On!
January 30, 2013
UPDATE: The giveaway winners are # 10 Nina S., who has won the March On set, and #61 Char W., who has won the Stone Soup set. Thanks to all who entered!
If you’ve followed this blog for any amount of time you probably know that I am a huge proponent of reading and not a huge fan of television. There are some high-quality TV programs and DVDs for which I make an exception, however. Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVDs fall into the “exceptional” category. Last year I posted about how excited I was to find the Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVD Collections at a deep discount. These DVDs have become absolutely our favorite things to watch. They’ve gotten us through many a long car trip, and they’ve exposed my girls to some excellent classic children’s stories!
What are Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVDs? They’re movie adaptations of the best children’s books available, some of which are decades old and some of which are very current. By watching these, your children will learn SO many of the stories that, really, all children should know. (Here’s a list of many – but not all – of the stories that are featured.) They assist with literacy in two ways. First, the words to each story are displayed on the screen so children can follow along. Second, your children will recognize the books when they’re in the library or the bookstore and will beg to take the stories home and read them. (This happens to us every Tuesday during our weekly library trip.)
You can browse through all their available titles here, and New Kideo (the company that brings you Scholastic videos) is offering a 20% discount with coupon code NEWKIDEO20.
My girls got three great DVD collections for Christmas, and we have really enjoyed watching them: The Pigeon Finds A Hot Dog, The Magic School Bus Field Trip Fun & Games, and My First Collection, Volume 4 Featuring Robot Zot. My 3-year-old daughter’s favorite is The Pigeon Finds A Hot Dog. It includes an interview with author Mo Willems, and after we watched that my daughters asked if they could be authors and ran to their art table where they promptly began writing their own books. I was thrilled! My 5-year-old daughter is really into the Magic School Bus DVDs, and she told me she’s a “science girl.” She had the chance to do an optional project for her school’s science fair and has created a pretty cool display on rainbows; she first got the idea after watching the Magic School Bus episode that discusses rainbows and light waves. I can heartily endorse all of these DVDs!
Last week we had two new DVDs come in the mail. Scholastic has just released two new titles:
STONE SOUP…AND OTHER STORIES FROM THE ASIAN TRADITION, and STORIES ABOUT AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE FEATURING MARCH ON!
We really enjoyed getting to review these titles! My girls both enjoyed the Stone Soup DVD as much as they have other Scholastic DVDs in the past. My oldest daughter even exclaimed, “Stone Soup! I love that story! My preschool teacher read that to us!”
This was the first year that we attempted a small history lesson on Martin Luther King on January 21 and most of it went over their heads, and we had the same experience when we reviewed the March On! DVD in the second collection. They’ll be ready for it when they’re a little older than 5 and 3, so we’ll be trying this one again in the future. Other DVDs in this set feature favorite stories like Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears as well as new-to-us stories about Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald, and we enjoyed those thoroughly.
I am THRILLED to be able to offer you all a giveaway of these two new releases from Scholastic Storybook Treasures! There will be two winners; if you win I’ll let you pick which title you’d like in the order that you’re randomly chosen. Here’s more info on each release, followed by info on how to win.
