Two free books (one highly recommended!):The Widow of Larkspur Inn by Lawana Blackwell and Beneath the Cloak by Chautona Havig

There are two free Kindle books today that are worth noting. Often I post about free Kindle books with the caviat that I haven’t read them and am not recommending them one way or the other. This one is different: I have read and can HIGHLY recommend the book The Widow of Larkspur Inn, which is free right now on Amazon. It’s not an action-packed novel, but it reminded me a great deal of Anne of Green Gables, which has been a favorite since childhood. I’ve since read all four Gresham novels and they were all sweet and lovely. Here’s the book description:

“When life seemed its worst, Gresham awaited…Julia Hollis’ opulent life in Victorian London crashes to pieces when her husband passes away. Worse, she is told by his bankers that he gambled away their fortune. Now, the family’s hope rests on The Larkspur, an old abandoned coaching inn in the quaint village of Gresham. Driven by dread and her desire to provide for her children, Julia decides to turn the dilapidated inn into a lodging house. But can she–who was accustomed to servants attending to every need–do what needs to be done and cope when boarders begin arriving? And then an eligible new vicar moves into town….”

The other free book is not one that I’ve read, but it looks interesting:

Beneath the Cloak (Annals of Wynnewood) by Chautona Havig. This is the third in a series, but the others are available to borrow for free if you’re an Amazon Prime member, or through Lendle.

Review and coupon for this month’s Kidtoons Movie: The Gruffalo’s Child

September’s Kidtoons movie is The Gruffalo’s Child.

Here’s what it’s about:

The Gruffalo’s Child
Kidtoons is proud to bring you this charming sequel to The Gruffalo, the original Academy Award nominated story and bestselling book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The Gruffalo’s Child follows the adventures of a curious little Gruffalo one wild and windy night through the deep dark wood. Despite her father’s scary stories, she sets off looking to meet the ‘big bad mouse’ in person, who is famed to be terribly big and terribly bad. Does he really exist? We’ll find out…

Here’s the trailer:

For a fun activity before or after taking your kids to see this movie there are free printable coloring sheets available here and here.

PLUS, this Kidtoons has a special offer: a BOGO coupon good at any of the participating Kidtoons theaters nationwide! (One coupon per family.)

Kidtoons movies can be seen in Knoxville at the Carmike Wynnsong 16. If you live in another area, here’s a list of other locations that feature Kidtoons movies.

The great thing about Kidtoons movies is that everyone there is with a child, so you don’t have to worry about keeping your kids quiet (relatively speaking, of course.)

Our opinion:

Kidtoons sent me a copy of The Gruffalo’s Child to review, plus a copy of The Gruffalo and a Gruffalo game. We have been huge fans of The Gruffalo for a while. It’s an amazing book, and not only have I read it to my own children, but I’ve also used it as the book-of-the week at the preschool where I teach. It’s fun to use different voices for mouse, fox, owl, snake, and Gruffalo (which is why, among other awards, it’s won the Blue Peter Award for the Best Book to Read Aloud). If you don’t own it, you should – it’s only $6.99 on Amazon right now.

The Gruffalo’s Child is a wonderful sequel to the original book/movie, and my kids have asked to watch it daily since it arrived. It’s just a really cute story, and it would be a really great one to catch in the theater. My kids did have different reactions based on their temperaments, just to warn you. My very bold three-year-old told me she “wasn’t scared at all, ” and she really wasn’t. My more timid five-year-old was scared at a number of parts. Not because the movie is, in fact, scary (although Snake is, a bit) but because it’s suspenseful in a kid-friendly way. Also, Helena Bonham-Carter narrates, the music is beautiful, and Hagrid plays The Gruffalo. Could it be any better? 🙂

Our final verdict: this movie is a new favorite! Make sure you check out both the book and the movie! And if you’re a HUGE Gruffalo fan, check out the official website, where they have games and giveaways.
