Book review (and Kindle sale price): A Perfect Word for Every Occasion by Liz Duckworth

September 29, 2012

I recently had the chance to read A Perfect Word for Every Occasion by Liz Duckworth (subtitle: Ideal for: Letters, Receiving Lines, Facebook, Emails, Thank You Notes, Condolences). This nonfiction book was published this September by Bethany House.

About this book (from the back cover):

“Have you ever wondered just what to say at a funeral, to a friend whose spouse is fighting cancer, or to someone going through a breakup?

The right words don’t always come easily. Sometimes we’re so afraid to say the wrong thing that we say nothing at all or resort to cliches. But with a little help you can share the perfect message that will draw you nearer to friends and loved ones.

This book offers examples and guidelines for things to say, lines to write, and Scripture verses to share. Full of encouraging messages organized by category–sympathy, thank-yous, congratulations, etc.–it will help you save time while strengthening your relationships. You will find the right words for formats old and new: Facebook messages, emails, cards, texting, receiving lines, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, weddings, funerals, and more. You’ll even discover what not to say.

A Perfect Word for Every Occasion is a trustworthy resource for words to bless the ones you love.”

Final Verdict:

You’d think, being a pastor’s wife, that I would know the right thing to say in difficult situations. However, that’s actually an area in which I really struggle. I really enjoyed the insight this book gave into how to determine the perfect thing to write or say in lots of different scenarios. The author doesn’t intend for you to copy and paste her exact sentiments, as that would be a bit insincere. Rather, she offers suggestions to get you started in creatively responding to any situation, happy or sad. There are also appropriate Scripture passages and quotes that you might use in written correspondence, and the sections on what NOT to say are helpful! The chapter titles are as follows, and since I can’t imagine anyone who won’t find him/herself in one of these situations, I think I can safely recommend this book to anyone:

Words for the Grieving; Words of Gratitude; Words for the Sick and Suffering; Words for Birthdays; Words for Weddings and Engagements; Words of Encouragement;Words for Celebrations; Words for Events and Activities; Words of Truth and Love; Words for a Changing World.

If you’d like to check out A Perfect Word for Every Occasion it is currently on sale for $9.39 for the Kindle version right now. (Regularly $12.99) If you prefer a hard copy it’s currently on sale for $11.97. Remember, Amazon’s prices can change at any time.
