Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy is coming October 17-21 to the Knoxville Civic Coliseum, and tickets go on sale this Friday August 31! Of particular interest: Tickets for opening night on October 17 are just $14! (excludes rinkside and VIP)

Also, there is a special show on Friday morning, October 19 at  10:30 a.m. That week is Fall Break for Knox County, so you might enjoy taking your kids to a Disney on Ice show as part of a fun stay-cation week!

I’m so excited, and can’t wait to take my girls to see this show. I think they’re going to be particularly thrilled about the Pixie Hollow portion of the show!

The lovely folks at Feld Entertainment are allowing me to give some passes away to you! These passes can be exchanged for tickets at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum box office, and are good for all reserved seating tickets except for front row and VIP tickets.

This giveaway will be structured a little differently than last year’s, at the request of the Disney on Ice folks. I’ll be giving away a set of four passes on five different occasions during five different weeks. I’ll keep you posted on when the next four giveaways will happen.

Here’s how to win the set of four passes for this week:

Required Entry:

Leave a comment on this post and let me know if you’ve ever been to Disney on Ice. That’s it! (If you’re reading this on Facebook/Twitter hop on over to thriftychristy.com)

Additional Optional Entries:

You can do each of the following things for an additional entry in the giveaway. You can only do each of these once, for a possible total of 5 entries. Please leave a separate comment for each method of entry.

This giveaway ends at midnight EST on Monday September 3. I will choose a winner on Tuesday September 4 using random.org and will contact them via email. Giveaway open to US readers only. You must be 18 or older to enter.

I received passes to Disney on Ice for my family plus additional passes from Feld Entertainment to give away to my readers. Feld Entertainment and The Walt Disney company are neither sponsors nor endorsers of this promotion. All opinions are my own.

Book review (and Kindle sale price): This Scarlet Cord, by Joan Wolf

I recently had the chance to read This Scarlet Cord by Joan Wolf, a historical fiction novel that develops the Biblical story of Rahab. This book was published this summer by Thomas Nelson.

About this book (from the back cover):

“Within one of the Old Testament’s most famous battles lies one of the most tender love stories. Hidden within the battle of Jericho is the story of Rahab, a beautiful and brave young Canaanite woman who aided the Israelites by hanging a piece of scarlet cord from a window. This act of faith changed her life by placing her in the genealogy of Christ.

Rahab is the youngest daughter of a Canaanite farmer, taken to Jericho for the pagan New Year so her father can find her a wealthy spouse. Sala, the Israelite boy who had once saved her from being kidnapped, is also in Jericho. When the two young people meet again they admit their love for one another, but their different religions make marriage impossible.

Their love story plays out against the background of Jericho’s pagan rites. It is only when the One True God of Israel comes into Rahab’s life—and she realizes what He is calling her to do—that she and Sala can come together.

Witness Rahab as a young woman determined to find her destiny as she follows her heart toward true love . . . and the One True God.”

Final Verdict:

I’ve read the story of Rahab and the fall of the walls of Jericho many times in my life, but recently my interest in that particular story was piqued after reading Francine Rivers’ AMAZING A Lineage of Grace. When you read fictional accounts of true-life Bible stories you have to be careful that you don’t integrate the fictional elements into your real-life understanding of the story. You have to think – things may have gone down that way, but all we really know to be true is what scripture tells us. What I did like about this book was Wolf’s easy-to-read writing style and the large about of historical research she did into the time period, especially on the pagan religions surrounding the gods of Ashera and Baal. The main thing I did not like – while trying to remain vague in order to avoid spoilers – was how an important piece of Rahab’s character was “redefined” in a way that I believe went against how she is described in scripture. Taking that into account, and reading this with a knowledge of what scripture tells us about the fascinating character of Rahab (as well as what we don’t know about her….because there are a lot of unanswered questions!) I found this to be an enjoyable read that kept my interest.

If you’d like to check out This Scarlet Cord it is currently on sale for $8.79 for the Kindle version right now. (Regularly $15.99) If you prefer a hard copy it’s currently on sale for $11.38. Remember, Amazon’s prices can change at any time.

New Luden’s cough drop coupon = good deals at CVS and Dollar Tree

I’m kind of a weirdo about cough drops. I love them. I lose my voice a lot in the winter, and I eat a lot of frozen grapes and cough drops. I was excited to see that there’s a new printable coupon available for $1.00 off of any 2 bags of Luden’s Cough Drops! These will be buy 1 get 1 free starting the week of September 2nd at CVS, and right now they’re reportedly as low as $0.50 at Dollar Tree (I haven’t been there to verify this price, so if you’re shopping there, let me know what price you see!)

Thanks, STL Mommy!
