The two Titanic Museum locations (ours and Branson’s) are the only places in the United States where guests can attend a tribute event. You can view the event info here. I am pleased to be associated with the Titanic Museum Attraction as one of their “Mom Bloggers” and am looking forward to taking my family to this event. Will I see you there?

To honor this event the Titanic Museum Attraction is allowing me to give away a family pass to their museum. Here’s how to win:

Thrifty Christy’s guide to the Junior League of Knoxville’s Bag-A-Bargain 2012

On Wednesday I worked my setup shift for the Junior League’s Bag-a-Bargain fundraising event. Being a rummage sale junkie, I always enjoy getting to sort through things and eyeball items I want to purchase. I took a few photos to show you around the sale, which is tomorrow from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Jacob Building in Chilhowee Park. I’ll be working my sale-day shift from 11 a.m. until the sale is over so if you’re there, come find me!

I’ve taken the guide I created last year and updated it to reflect the new locations of certain favorite sections of Bag-A-Bargain, specifically Treasure Chest! Please note that these photos were taken on the first day of setup, so  we were just getting organized and donations were just starting to come in. If the merchandise looks sparse, don’t worry: it’ll be packed on sale day!

Treasure Chest 2011, above

When we’re sorting through donated items, we (JLK members) set aside any items that are particularly expensive for the Treasure Chest section of the sale. I recommend you head for this section first, as you’re not allowed to bring other, non-Treasure Chest items inside, and it has a separate checkout. You will enter on the first floor of the Jacobs Building. This section is on the second floor in the front right corner. Hint: This is where I buy my Easter dress each year.

Here are a few items that were headed to Treasure Box when I was working:

You may notice that Treasure Chest is in a new location this year! Here’s a picture of the new location, if you’re a visual person:

There are a few sections that have moved, so it may help you to memorize the following two maps that I saw during my pre-sale shift. These were for league members on the first day of setup, so there’s always the chance something has changed…

Hope those maps are helpful!

The second area I visit when I’m shopping is the Children’s Clothing and Toys section.

This section takes up almost the entire right-hand side of the first floor. There are always really great kids clothes, toys, and other paraphernalia, like costumes. We love costumes in my family.

Next I head to the Books/Movies/Music section. One year I bought four bags of books. People were looking at me like I was crazy, but what can I say? I love books. This section is on the second floor directly above where you entered on the first floor.

Finally I just start to wander through the rest of the sale. I will probably head to the first floor for Adult Clothing, which is now against the back wall on the left-hand side of the building. Here’s what it looked like last year:

Also in Adult Clothing: rows and rows of shoes. My favorite so far are these Kate Spade heels. (If you’re saying, “Kate who?” just know that I did a quick search on the Saks website and found most Kate Spade shoes to be around $300. And did I mention that at our sale shoes are just $2?)

My next stop is Home Furnishings, which is right next to Adult Clothing, and takes up the largest portion of the left-hand side of the first floor. Here’s an aerial shot of the furniture:

And a few close-ups:

Every year the Bag-A-Bargain committee picks the donated item that is the most unusual and fun. Last year it was this deer antler lamp:

And the perennial favorite (and unofficial mascot of Bag-A-Bargain) is this purple velvet Virgin Mary coin bank:

Now you know there were many, many designer outfits and gorgeous pieces of furniture that I didn’t photograph, right? This sale is not all antler lamps and UT Polo shirts. I have found some treasures each year that I’ve attended Bag-A-Bargain. If you love rummage sales, you’re really going to enjoy this one.

So that’s it for my Bag-A-Bargain preview! If you have any questions about this event or the Junior League of Knoxville, please email me or leave a comment below. Don’t forget that you can get $1 off the $5 admission price if you bring a nonperishable food item for Mission of Hope.

Below are directions to the Jacob Building. I hope to see you tomorrow!

East on I-40 to James White Pkwy (Exit 388A; Take the Summit Hill Dr. exit; turn LEFT onto Summit Hill Dr. SE; then LEFT onto Hall of Fame Dr. SE; turn RIGHT onto E. Magnolia Ave NE stay on E. Magnolia appx 2.5 miles to entrance and parking area for Tennessee Valley Fair; The Jacob Bldg. will be on your LEFT, behind the Golden Glove Arena.

Giveaway: The Gruffalo prize pack from Kidtoons Films

I am really excited about this month’s Kidtoons movie! It’s one of my favorites: The Gruffalo. A friend of mine introduced us to the book by Julia Donaldson last year and we absolutely love it. We’re looking forward to seeing it in the NEW Carmike Foothills 12!

Here’s what the movie is about:

A mouse is taking a stroll through the deep, dark wood when along comes a hungry fox, then an owl, and then a snake. Since the mouse looks delicious to all, he explains that he’s meeting the Gruffalo! As Mouse explains, the Gruffalo is a creature with terrible claws, and terrible tusks in its terrible jaws, and knobbly knees and turned-out toes, and a poisonous wart at the end of its nose. But Mouse has no worry to show. After all, there’s no such thing as a Gruffalo. Right?

For a fun activity before or after taking your kids to see this movie there is a free printable coloring sheet available here and a fun printable Gruffalo mask here.

Kidtoons movies can be seen every Saturday and Sunday at 11:50 a.m. at Carmike Theaters in Maryville. The great thing about Kidtoons movies is that everyone there is with a child, so you don’t have to worry about keeping your kids quiet (relatively speaking, of course.)

Kidtoons is allowing me to give a Gruffalo prize pack to one of you! It includes the following:

  • One The Gruffalo Book
  • One The Gruffalo DVD
  • One The Gruffalo Rhyme Game
  • One The Gruffalo Kidtoons Movie Poster

Here’s how to win.

Required Entry:

Leave a comment on this post and let me know if you’ve ever been to a Kidtoons movie. (If you’re reading this on Facebook/Twitter hop on over to thriftychristy.com)

Additional Optional Entries:

You can do each of the following things for an additional entry in the giveaway. You can only do each of these once, for a possible total of 6 entries. Please leave a separate comment for each method of entry. If you only leave one comment then you only have one entry, as each comment is numbered and I randomly choose a number. Make sense?

This giveaway ends at midnight EST on Monday March 26. I will choose a winner on Tuesday March 27 using random.org and will contact them via email. Giveaway open to US readers only.
