Review and Giveaway: Farmer Jason Nature Jams CD; plus Farmer Jason show at the Knoxville Parenting Expo Feb 25

February 14, 2012

I’m excited to introduce you to my girls’ new favorite music: Nature Jams, a CD released last week by an artist called Farmer Jason.

First, a little about my philosophy of music and parenting.

I feel very strongly about the link between music and education, especially when it comes to children. That’s why I’m a preschool music teacher. Even as adults, we find it easier to memorize and learn things when they’re set to music, and that’s even more of the case when it comes to kids. They’re little sponges. Because I feel this way, the music we listen to in my home is a little different than some of my mommy friends. For example, I don’t listen to the radio in the car; instead we listen to educational CDs that teach my girls things (i.e. Dr. Jean) or expose them to different musical styles (opera, classical, jazz etc.). Sometimes it’s music that I like, and sometimes not, but either way I feel that it’s an important piece of my girls’ education.

I’ve heard of a number of CDs for hipster parents that take quirky or edgy adult music and change it into something for their kids, like lullabies. Sometimes that seems to me to be a bit insincere: it’s not really for the kids at all, rather, it’s for parents who still want to feel relevant.

So, about this new CD. It’s different, and great.

Farmer Jason is an artist who combines the best of both worlds. He is singing to your kids, not you, and sincerely wants them to learn. He just does it using really great music in partnership with people like Brandi Carlisle, Mike Mills (of R.E.M.) Hank Williams III, Tommy Ramone (of The Ramones), Tom Petersson (of Cheap Trick), Todd Snider, and our favorite, Victor Wooten. He also uses lots of different musical styles, which is really good exposure for your kids: folk, jazz, zydeco, rock etc.

His songs teach kids about different things in nature: animals (manatees, bison), activities (canoeing, spelunking) and environments (glaciers, prairies).

From his bio:

Farmer Jason is Jason Ringenberg, renowned for his pioneering band Jason and the Scorchers, which won the Lifetime Achievement Award for Live Performance by the Americana Music Association in 2008 and still tours internationally. Since 2003, as Farmer Jason, he has also built a fervid international fan base for his kids’ music and Emmy Award winning public television music videos. The father of three daughters lives on a small farm west of Nashville. He is the first artist signed to the new Universal Music label MyKaZoo.

Here’s the full list of songs on this CD. I’ve highlighted our three current favorites, but they’re all good.

1) Nature Jams
2) Can You Canoe with Alison Brown
3) Take a Hike with Mike Mills (of R.E.M.)
4) Well Oh Whale with The Saw Doctors
5) Meadowlark in Central Park with Suzy Bogguss
6) Bayou Boogie with Terrance Simien
7) Prairie Riddles with Iris Dement
8) Buffalo or Bison? by Webb Wilder
9) Dison the Bison with Webb Wilder and Steve Gorman (of The Black Crowes)
10) Spelunker with Tom Petersson (of Cheap Trick) and Ruthie Foster
11) The Glacier with Jason and the Scorchers
12) Manatee with Hank Williams III and Tommy Ramone (of The Ramones)
13) No Place Like the Woods by Victor Wooten and The Wooten Kids
14) The Moose Lives Where? with Todd Snider and Jo Nesbø
15) Have You Ever with Brandi Carlile
16) Skating Along with Kristi Rose, Addie and Camille Ringenberg

The CD also includes a DVD with four music videos on it. My kids thought these were pretty great as well. If you’d like to purchase the Nature Jams CD, you can get it for $9.99 right now on Amazon. This CD is on the new Universal Music label MyKaZoo.

I’m excited to announce that as part of his tour schedule, Farmer Jason is coming to Knoxville! He will be performing at the Parenting Expo on February 25 at the Knoxville Expo Center. The Expo Center is located at 5441 Clinton Highway. Farmer Jason’s concerts will be at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Admission to the Parenting Expo is just $5 for a family of four! (I’m not sure about the cost for a family of 5+, but I’m sure it can’t be much more.)

Farmer Jason will also be the guest on WDVX’s Kidstuff show on March 3. Kidstuff airs at 10 a.m. EST on Saturday mornings on WDVX and is a show full of high-quality music geared the young and the young at heart. You can listen locally on 89.9 or 102.9 and there’s a webcast at www.wdvx.com.
