Review: Titanic Museum’s new movie exhibit, plus 2nd Annual Ice Carving Competition
February 3, 2012

I was 17 years old when the movie Titanic came out, and I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that I saw it multiple times in the theater. I was interested to hear about the new Titanic movie exhibit at the Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge (which is there for a limited time only) and was really excited to get to take my girls to see it! Of course, being 2 and 4, they haven’t seen the movie yet, but they do love pretty clothes and jewelry, so they enjoyed it all the same.
The Titanic Museum’s website describes this as an “exclusive behind-the-scenes exhibit that follows TITANIC’s Jack-and-Rose story – on the set, from the director’s chair. The exhibit will also feature props, costumes, scripts and other valuable collectibles from the film.”
I think our favorite thing to see was the diamond “Heart of the Ocean” necklace, worth I-can’t-remember-how-many millions of dollars. I’ve seen the crown jewels in London, and this necklace looks like something that would fit in there. It’s gorgeous. Also, can we talk about how tiny Kate Winslett is? There were a number of her dresses, and they were all movie-star sized.
My husband is a big movie guy, and he enjoyed this exhibit too. If you weren’t aware, Titanic is being released in 3D in April, and all of this is to commemorate the 100 year anniversary (April ) of when the Titanic set sail and was shipwrecked.
The movie exhibit is about halfway through your tour of the entire Titanic Museum. My girls always enjoy going to the Titanic Museum, and my 4-year-old even did pretty well with the audio guides this time! Plus, there’s a kids’ area they always love visiting.
One of the things I always find most interesting is the Boarding Pass I’m given before I enter the museum. This Boarding Pass assigns you the identity of one of the real passengers on the Titanic, complete with their history and location on board (First Class, etc.) At the end of your visit to Titanic you are able to see the fate of your passenger. It’s really very moving.
If you’re planning a trip to the Titanic Museum Attraction, you’ll want to text TITANIC to 62447 for specials and information. You can also text ICEBERG to 62447 for a merchandise discount in the gift shop.
Our trip to the Titanic Museum also coincided with a special event they were holding: the 2nd Annual Ice Carving Competition.

This was a free event that took place outside the Titanic Museum, and when we got there early in the morning there were already crowds. Ice carving is a really interesting form of sculpture art. If you’re the kind of person who enjoys going to see art exhibits and festivals in places like Townsend, then you’d really enjoy this event.
Here are some photos I took while being pulled on from either side by my daughters. (That’s my excuse for why they’re not professional quality.)
From the official event description about the Ice Carving competition “the world’s-most celebrated ice sculptors chiseled 250-pound blocks of ice into fantastic designs.” Amateurs and professionals competed to win prize monies. Here are the winners:
Professional division
| 1st | Todd Dawson | War Horse |
| 2nd | Eric Pfaff | High Hopes |
| 3rd | Edwin Hutchinson | A Taste of Spring |
Amateur division
| 1st | Duane Schmelhaus | Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder |
| 2nd | Jeff Lein | The Guardian |
| 3rd | Jayme Schumacher | Firebird Rising |
People’s Choice Award
| 1st | Edwin Hutchinson | A Taste of Spring |
I’m looking forward to attending this event again in January 2013!
Disclosure: As part of the Titanic’s Mom Bloggers Panel, I was given passes for my family to visit the Titanic Museum Attraction. All opinions are my own.
