Review and giveaway: Stellaluna DVD from Scholastic/New Kideo

We love the book Stellaluna, by Janell Cannon. It tells the story of a fruit bat named Stellaluna who is separated from her mother as an infant and is raised by a family of birds, who are a lot like her, but also very different.

Stellaluna was a featured book on Reading Rainbow, which is good enough of an endorsement for me! It is a good tool for teaching science lessons about bats and birds to kids; for example, we have had lots of discussions about nocturnal and diurnal behavior.

We were excited to receive a copy of the newest movie version of Stellaluna which was released on DVD last week by Scholastic/New Video Group. Here’s the official plot summary:

“When the adorable young fruit bat Stellaluna is separated from her mother, she’s adopted by a family of birds. Soon, however, she discovers that she just can’t fit in. Her playmates like to sleep at night; she wants to fly. They whistle and sing; she doesn’t even have a beak! But just when it seems like Stellaluna will always be an outsider, she makes an amazing discovery that will help her to cherish the things that make her different.”

We are huge fans of Scholastic movies, especially the Scholastic Storybook Treasures Collection, which provides animated versions of classic children’s storybooks. Stellaluna is a little different, in that it’s not just an animated reading of the book. In order to make it more of a feature-length there are new characters and storylines that have been added. I have to admit that I’m more partial to movies that are an exact retelling of the book, but most movies don’t do that. This movie provided my girls and me with the opportunity to talk about similarities and differences between the book and movie. It’s something that we often do with books that have movie versions. I always insist on reading the book first, and then we watch the movie. We did this with James & the Giant Peach, Heidi, and a number of other books.

Another thing I like about this movie is that it comes with an activity book that you can copy and have your children color. There is also a printable coloring sheet available:

Would you like to win a copy of this DVD for your family? Here’s how to enter:

Thanks to New Kideo (the children’s division of New Video Productions) and Scholastic for providing me with a copy of Stellaluna to review and one to give away. All opinions in this review are solely my own. Giveaway open to US readers only.

Giveaway: win one of two sets of tickets to the Junior League of Knoxville’s Bag-A-Bargain sale!

It’s hard to believe this is my last year as an active member of the Junior League of Knoxville. One of my favorite events as a League member each year has always been our Bag-A-Bargain giant rummage sale. If you’re not familiar with Bag-A-Bargain, here’s the guide I created last year. This year’s sale will be Saturday March 10. I work my assigned set-up shift next week, and will try to post a 2012 guide at that time.

Tickets to this amazing thrift sale are just $5, and you can get $1 off each ticket at the door by bringing a canned food item. There’s also a $1 off coupon in the Knoxville Schools Coupon Book (but you can’t combine discounts). Tickets go on sale at 7 a.m. the day of the sale, doors open at 8 a.m., and be aware that people WILL line up to get in. There were even lines the year it snowed.

Today, I’m really excited to offer a giveaway for you! Two lucky winners will win two tickets each to Bag-A-Bargain. Here’s how to enter:

Required Entry:

To enter to win, just leave a comment below letting me know if you’ve ever been to Bag-A-Bargain. That’s it!  (If you’re reading this on Facebook/Twitter hop on over to thriftychristy.com to leave your comment.)

Additional Optional Entries:

You can do each of the following things for an additional entry in the giveaway. You can only do each of these once, for a possible total of 6 entries.

Please leave a separate comment for each method of entry. If you only leave one comment then you only have one entry, as each comment is numbered and I randomly choose a number. Make sense?

This giveaway ends tomorrow, February 29, at noon EST. I will choose a winner via random.org and will post his or her name at that time. Giveaway open to US readers only.

You can also enter to win tickets on Coupon Katie’s blog here.

Deal on Community Coffee at Kroger: $3.49/bag!

I found a really great deal on coffee at Kroger yesterday. There was a special display of Community Coffee in the back of the store, and the 12-oz bags were on sale for $5.49. Plus, most of the bags had a $2/1 peelie on the front, making each bag $3.49! (Peelie coupons not shown above because I took the photo after checking out, sorry!) I love Community Coffee, and was super excited to get it for $3.49/bag.

Two movie tickets for $14 today on Eversave plus the opening of our new Maryville Carmike Cinemas

Today on Eversave there’s a deal that I bought: $14 for two movie tickets through Hollywood Movie Money. I checked the Hollywood Movie Money website and we should be able to use these vouchers at most of the Carmike and Regal theaters in Maryville and Knoxville. You can buy up to five sets of tickets.
Plus, are you as excited as I am about the new Maryville Carmike Cinemas? I saw today that they’re opening March 7!

clipix: an online way to organize ideas

I was recently introduced to a site called clipix, which is a website that allows you to “clip” ideas and file them into personalized folders using a “Clip” button you add to your internet toolbar. Here’s an example of a folder I’ve clipped called “Books I’d like to read.”

clipix1

This is a great way for me to be able to visually organize items on my “to read” list. I just visit Amazon and when I see a book I like I click the “clip” button on my toolbar and the book is saved into a folder that’s easy for me to access. There’s also an iPhone app for clipix so you can clip things when you’re away from home. Other ideas for folders include:

  • Recipes
  • Decorating ideas
  • Gift ideas
  • Party planning
  • Movies you’d like to see
  • And really anything else you can think of!

You can change privacy settings to fit your needs, and you can also use the Syncboard function to share things with others in real time, which is useful if you’re planning an event like a party. You can also reclip clips and share them via Facebook or Twitter.

Here’s a video that explains exactly how to get started:
