Thrifty Christy’s guide to the Junior League of Knoxville’s Bag-A-Bargain

March 4, 2011

Yesterday I worked my setup shift for the Junior League’s Bag-a-Bargain event. Being a rummage sale junkie, I always enjoy getting to sort through things and eyeball items I want to purchase. I took a few photos to show you around the sale, which is tomorrow from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Jacob Building in Chilhowee Park. I’ll be working my sale-day shift from 7:30 – 11:30 a.m. so if you’re there, come find me! (Please note: the following photos were taken during setup, so things were not completely organized yet.)

When we’re sorting through donated items, we (JLK members) set aside any items that are particularly expensive for the Treasure Chest section of the sale. I recommend you head for this section first, as you’re not allowed to bring other, non-Treasure Chest items inside, and it has a separate checkout. You will enter on the first floor of the Jacobs Building. This section is on the second floor in the front left corner. Hint: This is where I buy my Easter dress each year.

The second area I hit is the Children’s Clothing section. It takes up almost the entire right-hand side of the first floor. There are always really great kids clothes, toys, and other paraphernalia.

Next I head to the Books/Movies/Music section. Last year I bought four bags of books. People were looking at me like I was crazy, but what can I say? I love books. This section is on the second floor directly above where you entered on the first floor.

Finally I just start to wander through the rest of the sale. I will probably head to the first floor for Adult Clothing, shown below.

Then I’ll head to Home Furnishings, which is right next to Adult Clothing. Check out this display case with pillow. My girls would love to get this to display our tiara collection.

There’s even an entire section for University of Tennessee items!

Every year the Bag-A-Bargain committee picks the donated item that is the most unusual and fun. Last year it was this velvet Virgin Mary coin bank:

This year, so far, it’s the deer antler lamp:

Now you know there were many, many designer outfits and gorgeous pieces of furniture that I didn’t photograph, right? This sale is not all antler lamps and UT Polo shirts. I have found some treasures each year that I’ve attended Bag-A-Bargain. If you love rummage sales, you’re really going to enjoy this one.

So that’s it for my Bag-A-Bargain preview! If you have any questions about this event or the Junior League of Knoxville, please email me or leave a comment below. Don’t forget that you can get $1 off the $5 admission price if you bring a nonperishable food item for Mission of Hope.

Below are directions to the Jacob Building. I hope to see you tomorrow!
